San Francisco’s Chinatown is a neighborhood I’ve never spent a lot of time in, and I thought that was a shame. So one day I got up early and went over there alone with my camera. It’s such a colorful neighborhood, and densely packed with people getting their business done. That said, I realize that my photos don’t have a lot of human presence in them. One reason is that it was still fairly early in the day and the streets were not crowded at all, as about half the businesses on the streets hadn’t opened up shop yet. The other reason is that I feel gawky, awkward, and even a little bit rude photographing strangers, even though they’re in a public place. I stuck to the main streets that run north and south (Stockton and Grant) but if you ask me, the alleys are where the real good stuff is.
